Could you consider what evolved from Rock - eg Heavy Metal led to the NWOBHM, which led to thrash (which also involved punk), which led to industrial, which led to Nu Metal, which led to Emo, Scremo and so on...
It may be picking one genre and exploding it in to sub genres to see what you can discover. It will help when it comes to planning your mag to know where the sub-genres lie and maybe a little about their history.
Don't get too bogged down with this, it's just a pointer to help with your contents and DPS ideas.
